I just thought I'd rate and share a few spoiler-free thoughts on the 60 movies I've seen in the past two years.
My ratings are based on my own personal enjoyment of each film and are not based on artistic merit or Oscar-worthiness. I am not a critic nor I have not studied film; I'm just a dude who likes and has seen an above average amount of movies. So, according to my ratings, Citizen Kane (critically considered one of the greatest movies of all time) would get only a 6 or 7 based on my own enjoyment of it while Rush Hour 2, a movie I love and grew up with, would get a 9 out of 10 (Rush Hour 2 received 48/100 on Metacritic).
On another note, I would never look down on someone for liking a movie that I didn't. Movies are for entertainment and everybody has different tastes. If you're entertained by a movie, someone else's opinion of it shouldn't take away from your enjoyment. I admit that's why, if I watch a movie with others and they ask me what I thought of it, I tend to stick to saying vague, generally positive things. It's not that I'm trying to please others by agreeing with them and I certainly don't want to be dishonest, but I also don't want to discourage others from liking something they like. Maybe that's silly of me but I want my friends to be happy and I would never want to take away from their fun. Plus, I don't think such things are worth causing a fuss about. However, if a person honestly wants to know what I think and assures me that they wont be offended by my opinion, I'll happily discuss it with them. Though I have pretty definite and thought-out opinions about the movies I watch, I do enjoy hearing the reasons that others like and dislike certain films, even if they differ from mine. I may not agree but I'm open to different perspectives and I could be swayed given the right argument.
To the left is the rating scale with a general explanation of what each grade means to me. Again, it's not based on how objectively good or bad a movie is, just my enjoyment of it. I kept the blurbs of each movie relatively short and purposefully non-specific so as not to spoil anything for people who haven't seen them. Unfortunately, as a result, I fear they're all so vague and generic that they're worth almost nothing. Oh well.
Neat, my movie ratings have resulted in a remarkably normal distribution. The data is skewed a hair to the right, meaning I'm generally positive about the movies I watch. That's not an accident since I'm pretty selective about the movies I choose to spend my time watching. No 1s or 10s in the bunch— those are extremely rare. I'm not sure if I'd ever watch a movie that I'd give a 1 to in the first place. Although, there have been a few movies that I started watching but have no desire to finish: Sausage Party (2016) and Requiem for a Dream (2000) to name a couple. Since my ratings are based on my own enjoyment of the film, it's arguable that those deserve 1s. However, I don't like rating movies that I haven't finished.
A difference of opinion
Just for fun, here all the movies of which my opinions seem to most differ (negatively) from others, both the general public and critics.
